Cesar Chavez March 30, 2008

chavez

The relatively new Cesar Chavez statue on the the University of Texas campus is by far my favorite recent addition to the school. Responding to criticism that all of the statues on campus are ridiculous representations of old dead white men, with nary a minority or woman in sight, the statue was erected in the hopes of telling the truthful story behind the history of Texas. The Barbara Jordan statue will not be too far behind, and hopefully they’ll make her look as badass as Chavez. If you’re not inspired to lead a revolt looking at that thing, then check your pulse.

Deep in the Heart March 25, 2008

capitol

It was a gorgeous day in the heart of Texas, despite the gale-force winds. Every day I ride through the Capitol building grounds, and today it was looking particularly regal.

If only what was going on inside that building was as attractive as what was going on outside.

rorary

As is evidenced by the gnarly looking ball in the above picture, Roary’s favorite game is chasing after things at Auditorium Shores. But only at Auditorium Shores. We tried the dog park, and the results included bloody paws and heartbreak.

If there’s one thing I learned from my recent trip to Mexico, it’s that pelicans are just as fabulous as you think. And definitely not endangered. Those mo-fos are everywhere.

Bikes and Books March 21, 2008

bike

I love my bike. I especially love my bike basket, for reasons that I’m sure you understand. I mean, it’s a wicker basket. And it’s on my bike.

But what I love most about my bike is that I can ride it to work. Not only do I get to go to a library almost every day, but I get to peddle there on my lemon-colored, basket-endowed dream machine. Life is good.
